    Experiental Learning

    Experiential Learning

    Posted on December 5, 2023

School education through spontaneous research practices has now reached a certain level where the focus is more on classroom lectures and little to no hands-on exposure to the subjects being taught. Often laboratory experiments are treated as a part of curriculum requisites and hence are void of creativity and innovations. Back in the days, when formal education procedures were under development, learning was centric on experiences rather than just a well-decorated collection of information. In the modern context, those orthodox practices are termed experiential learning.

Modern-day education system revolves around the concept of classroom lectures devoting most of their time to imparting bookish knowledge. Although monotonous, the resultant scenario has its origin in several factors that were peculiar in the past. Firstly, the count of students in the present state is huge limiting the accessibility and availability of resources. Secondly, the school has to run on a specific budget thus driving the adoption of economically viable approaches. Thirdly, the pattern of examinations and cut-throat competition together victimize the students towards theoretical expertise. But the learning of students is above all has to be effective and far-reaching.

Hands-on learning common for experiential learning provides students with an opportunity to explore the practical aspects of the subjects that are being taught in the classroom setting making it much more effective.  A typical classroom consists of different categories of learners. According to an article by Poonam Kharb et al published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research on June 7, 2013, Kinesthetic learners were the most common type of learners in their study of 100 medical students. This type of learner is strongly benefitted by the hands-on learning scheme. Thus, experiential learning must be a matter of concern for every classroom teaching strategy.
